Photosynthesis designates the set of processes by which chlorophyllous organisms, in the presence of light, carry out the synthesis of organic matter from mineral matter. The water taken up from the soil by the absorbent hairs of the root and the carbon dioxide captured at the level of the foliar stomata are used, within the chloroplasts of the parenchyma cells, as the substrates of a chain of reactions whose energy is supplied by the photons captured by the chlorophyll pigments; the outcome is the production of glucose, precursor of the storage carbohydrates and of the constituents of the cell wall, together with the release of dioxygen into the atmosphere.
